Climbing Cotopaxi and Chimborazo in 10 days

Day1.- Quito - City – Teleférico - Quito
Quito is recognized as a cultural heritage site by UNESCO. As the capital of our country, we visit it's Historical Center with innumerable churches like the Company of Jesus, the Cathedral, and the Presidential Palace. In the afternoon, we go to the "teleférico", a cable car that takes us to an extraordinary view of the Ecuadorian Capitol.

Day2.- Quito - Guagua Pichincha 4790m - Machachi
We leave early in the morning to hike to the Guagua Pichincha, an acclimation hike to its summit that presents no technical difficulty. Later, we will go to Aloasi, where we will spend the night in a family hostel. 4-5 hour hike, 600m positive slope.

Day3.- Machachi Corazón 4800m Machachi
We will take our private transportation 30 min to the highest point that we can, then hike to the summit of this beautiful volcano. From here, we can observe the entire Andres mountain range and the Avenue of the Volcanoes. On this hike, there is no technical difficulty. 6-7 hours of hiking, 1000 meters positive slope. Night spent in a hostel.

Day4.- Machachi - Iliniza Norte 5125m - Machachi
On day 4, we leave early in the morning in our private transportation to the area of the Virgin, take our backpacks and hike to the refuge, a 2 to 3 hour hike, then rest. We will continue to the summit, another 2 or 3 hours, depending on our physical condition. We will have to use our hand in some areas on this hike. 6-7 hours of hiking, 1200 meters.

Day5.- Machachi - Shelter Cotopaxi 4860m.
In our private transportation, we will drive to the parking lot at Cotopaxi Volcano located at 4600 meters in altitude. With our equipment, we will begin the 1 hour hike to the Jose Ribas refuge at 4860 meters of altitude. In the afternoon, we will have a little lesson and try out our equipment on the glacier. We will then have dinner and rest at the refuge. Positive slope 400m.

Day6.- Shelter - Cumbre 5897-Baños
We start our ascent at 1 o'clock in the morning. After a 6-7 hour hike over the glacier, we will arrive at the summit where we can admire the crater and the Andean mountain range. Weather permitting, it takes 2-3 hours to descend to the refuge. We will hike over crevices and drops at 40 degree slopes. With good acclimation and good physical condition, this shouldn't be a problem. It is great training for the next peak. 1100 meters of positive slope and 1350 negative slope. Upon returning to the refuge we will prepare our equipment and go to the car and drive to Baños to have a rest in its thermal baths. We will then have dinner and rest at the hotel.

Day7.- Baños
Baños is known for its adventure sports like white water rafting, paragliding, biking, zip lining, etc. We will have a day of rest to be able to see the waterfalls or try an extreme sport. In case we are unable to climb Cotopaxi the previous day, this day serves as an extra day for the last try.

Day8.- Baños – Refugio Chimborazo Whymper 5000m.
We will drive leisurely for 2 hours to the first refuge at Chimborazo, at 4800 meters. Here we will prepare our equipment and continue to the Whymper refuge at 5000 meters. We will eat dinner and rest.

Day9.- Cumbre del Chimborazo 6310 – Baños
We will depart at midnight to the highest summit in Ecuador and the furthest peak from the center of the earth. The climb is more technical and physical than Cotopaxi and a 8 to 12 hour hike. Upon our return to the refuge, we will continue by car back to Baños to rest.

Day10.- Baños – Quito
A free day in Baños and, in the afternoon, we return to Quito. This day is also reserved in case the weather does not permit us to reach the summit of Chimborazo.
